The 1987 Southern Connecticut State University men’s soccer team set the bar for all future squads to emulate when it captured the NCAA Division II title with a 2-0 victory over Cal-State Northridge in Tampa, Fla.
SCSU finished the year with a 17-1-3 record and entered NCAA action with a 14-1-3 mark that included a win over Division I Maryland. The Owls defeated LIU-C.W. Post (3-2) and Missouri-St. Louis (1-0) to earn a spot in the final.
In the championship game, freshman John DeBrito netted both goals and keeper Mike Cashman posted a clean sheet to secure the title for the Owls.
