“Mrs. V”, Carolyn Vanacore is one of the longest-running supporters of Southern Connecticut State University athletics, beginning with her undergraduate days at New Haven Teachers’ College, which later became Southern Connecticut State College. At Southern, Vanacore competed in field hockey, basketball and softball.

Upon her graduation, she served for 13 years as a teacher, coach and intramural director at a number of area schools beginning at North Haven High School. In 1965, she joined Southern Connecticut as an assistant professor of women’s physical education and in 1982 was named the Director of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Safety. She held that position until her retirement in 1989. During that time, she completed her Master’s in Education in 1968 and her 6th Year Administrative Supervision graduate degree in 1973.

While “retired”, Vanacore continues her career as a Professor Emeritus in which she supervises student teachers while also working with the alumni and athletic departments in spearheading multiple development efforts.

Vanacore was previously honored with the CAHPERD Professional Merit Award, YWCA Women in Leadership Award, Yale Visiting Faculty Fellowship, YMCA Outstanding Volunteer Service, CT Association of Athletic Directors Distinguished Service Award, Lyman Hall High School Hall of Fame, Eastern District (AAHPERD) Merit Award in Physical Education, the National Girls and Women in Sports Pathfinder Award, the Saint Clare Award by the Sisters of St. Francis and the Southern Connecticut State University Distinguished Alumni Award.
