Gene Casey, a professor of physical education, served as Southern’s head baseball coach from 1962 to 1975, during which his teams collected a fine 175-92-2 record and won the NCAA Atlantic Coast League Championship at Yankee Stadium in 1965. He was District Coach of the Year in 1965 and 1966. Casey also served as assistant football coach for the Owls from 1954 to 1962 and coached several area semi-professional football teams. For many years, he was executive director with the area chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame.
