James Barber, ’64, was a guard and Most Valuable Player for the Owls’ football team in 1964. He was also captain of the track and field team that year, and he held records in the 120-yard high hurdles, and the 330- and 440-yard intermediate hurdles. He went on to serve as assistant football and track coach. He was named head coach of the Southern women’s indoor and outdoor track teams in 1983.  
 
On the international scene, he was assistant coach for the USA Women's Track and Field team USA vs Great Britain in 1993, he was head coach of the USA Women's Track and Field Team for the IAAF Indoor Championship in 1997, head coach USA Women's Track and Field Team at World Cup Meet in 2002 and assistant coach USA Women's Team at World Cup 2008 
 
At the U.S. Olympic Festivals he was an assistant coach for the East Men's team 1991 and head coach in 1994. He helped to found the United States Track Coaches Association and was named the USTCA’s Indoor Regional Coach of the Year in 2002. He also received the 2000 Service Award for Colleges and Universities from the United States Women’s Coaches Track Association.
