James Barber, ’64, was a guard and Most Valuable Player for the Owls’ football team in 1964. He was also captain of the track and field team that year, and he held records in the 120-yard high hurdles, and the 300- and 440-yard intermediate hurdles. He went on to serve as assistant football and track coach. He was named head coach of the Southern women’s indoor and outdoor track teams in 1983. On the international scene, he was head coach of the USA Team for the IAAF World Cup Meet in 2002, head coach of the USA Team at the World Indoor Championships. At the U.S. Olympic Festivals he was an assistant coach in 1991 and head coach in 1994. He helped to found the United States Track Coaches Association and was named the USTCA’s Indoor Regional Coach of the Year in 2002. He also received the 2000 Service Award for Colleges and Universities from the United States Women’s Coaches Track Association.
