Kevin Gilbride, ’74, was the first Southern graduate to become a head coach in the National Football League when he took the reins of the San Diego Chargers in 1997. A tight end and quarterback for the Owls, he went on to assistant coaching positions at Idaho State University, Tufts University and American International College before returning to Southern as Head Coach in 1980. He led his teams to a 35-14-2 record in five seasons as the Owls were ranked among the nation’s top 10 Division II teams. He coached with the Ottawa Rough Riders in the Canadian Football League, and at East Carolina University. He served as offensive coordinator and assistant head coach with the NFL’s Houston Oilers from 1989 to 1994, and as offensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 1995 and 1996. Gilbride went on to win two Super Bowls while on the staff of the New York Giants.
