Michael Lewis (BS Marketing- ’89) was a six-time track & field All-American, earning five honors during the indoor season and one during the outdoor season. Of his six All-American honors, he was Southern Connecticut’s first All-American in the 800 Meter event and at the time of his graduation, was the most decorated track & field student-athlete in program history. He was the program’s Rookie of the Year in 1986, followed with MVP honors in 1987 before being named the team’s captain in 1988.
Lewis earned two All-American awards in 1987, followed by three honors in 1988 including a NCAA runner-up in the indoor 800 Meter race and two more in 1989. In 1987, Lewis was part of the SCSU contingent that were the first student-athletes invited to the prestigious Milrose Games and the Penn Relays as part of the two-mile relay team. Lewis also broke eight SCSU track & field school records, including four individual records and four relay records. In addition, he anchored the 4x800 Meter Relay team that broke the facility record while competing at North Carolina State University, at the Raleigh Relays. This is also a Division II NCAA record.
Following his graduation, Lewis pursued a long and successful career in music marketing and event/cause marketing. His accomplishments include his service as the Marketing Chair for USA Track & Field New York City Association also served as a marketing consultant to the Goodwill Games held in New York City in 1998 and the Armory Track also in New York City. He became a member of the prestigious New York Athletic Club (NYAC) in 2008 and eight years later, a proud dad to Mikaeel Elmi Lewis, quite possibly his protege.
