Michael Vanacore, ’51, was the first Southern graduate to become a head football coach when he began at North Haven High School in 1958. He guided the Indians to winning records in 11 of 14 seasons, amassing a 70-39-7 career record. He then went on serve as North Haven’s director of athletics from 1973 to 1978. An outstanding football player at Southern, Vanacore was instrumental in the reorganization of the Owl Varsity Club.
