Women's Soccer Falls To Southern New Hampshire, 2-1, In Double Overtime In NE10 Quarterfinals

MANCHESTER, N.H.  - The Southern Connecticut State women's soccer team dropped a double-overtime heartbreaker to Southern New Hampshire, 2-1, in a Northeast 10 Conference match-up at Penmen Stadium in Manchester, N.H.

The Owls came back from a one-goal deficit to tie the game late in regulation before playing to a draw through the first overtime period. SNHU converted in the final five minutes of the second overtime to advance to the conference semifinals. With the loss, SCSU drops to 8-7 overall while SNHU improves to 11-2-2 on the year.

Johanna Wahlen (Karlsruhe, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany) scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 75th minute of play. Olivia Holubecki (Ledyard, Conn.) scored what appeared to be the game-tying goal 20 minutes prior to Wahlen's penalty kick, but had the goal waved off as officials determined her indirect kick, which bent around SNHU keeper Hannah Rose, was not touched.

SCORING
  • SNHU 1, SCSU 0 (13:46, 1st): Sydney Carney took a long cross pass at the top of the box from Danielle Humphreys, slid around a Southern Connecticut defender and then tucked a shot inside the near-side goal post to give Southern New Hampshire a 1-0 lead. Carney's goal was her seventh of the season.
  • SCSU 1, SNHU 1 (75:04, 2nd): Moments after Olivia Holubecki's indirect kick goal was waved off without a touch, the Owls found themselves in position to tie the game when SNHU was whistled for a penalty in front of their own goal. Owls' leading goal scorer Johanna Wahlen converted on the penalty kick, lacing a shot to the top right corner to knot the game at 1-1 with 15 minutes to play.'
  • SNHU 2, SCSU 1 (105:15, 2OT): SNHU's Dorthea Glorud centered a pass to the middle of the box where Shae Roys buried the game-winner.

NOTES
  • Wahlen's fifth goal of the season was Southern Connecticut's first Northeast 10 Conference Tournament goal in the Owls' last four postseason tournament games and the first since Victoria Buonnanni scored in a 2-1 loss to Franklin Pierce in 2014.
  • Abigail Allen (Orange, Conn.) was solid in goal for the Owls, stopping six of eight shots on goal.
  • Freshman Greta Brunello (Carisolo, Italy) may have made the play of the game late in the second overtime. Brunello played a ball high in the Owls' box where she was tripped up by an attacker. As the ball slid to the opposite post, Brunello recovered and tackled the wide-open SNHU player to end the Penmen's scoring threat.
