About SCSU Athletics

Quick Facts

HOOT ARE THE OWLS?
The Southern Connecticut State University Owls are 500-plus strong, across 19 varsity NCAA Division II sports and more than 300 undergraduate students competing in club sports, every year. We come from 21 states, Puerto Rico and 12 different countries. We're more than just a number on a roster in the program. We're more than goal scorers, home run hitters, fast runners and swimmers or graceful gymnasts.

We're also:

Outstanding Students: Southern Connecticut State University Athletics combined for a 3.17 GPA for the 2021-22 academic year. For the Spring 2022 semester, the Owls featured seven programs with a team GPA of 3.0-or-higher. SCSU Softball combined for a department-high team GPA of 3.58 while SCSU Baseball led all men's teams with a 3.28 GPA. In addition, 302 student-athletes posted a GPA of 3.0-or-higher, including 34 with a 4.0, and 179 student-athletes with a 3.5-or-higher GPA. Southern Connecticut also featured 21 student-athletes that were named to a Northeast-10 Conference Academic All-Conference team.

Award Winners: Greta Brunello became just the fourth SCSU student-athlete to win the prestigious Barnard Award, which is given to four SCSU undergraduate students annually to recognize their community service and excellence in the classroom.

World Ambassadors: Katie Williamson, from Dublin, Ireland, was selected as the Northeast 10 Conference's representative to the NCAA Division II National Student Athlete Advisory Committee.

Champions: Jordan Davis became the 81st student-athlete in SCSU Athletics' history to win a NCAA Division II Championship when he took the crown in the Javelin event in 2022. Historically, Southern Connecticut has also won 10 NCAA Division II National Championships including six for men's soccer (1987, 1990, 1992, 1995, 1998, 1999), three in men's gymnastics (1973, 1975, 1976) and one in women's basketball (2007). All-Americans: Owl's student-athletes have collected over 1,200 All-American honors, all-time, including 23 in 2022.

Involved: Socially, our teams support the community through food and toy drives, new student move-in day and much more. Lifelong learning and our student-athletes' well-being are paramount to our success. Guest speakers like former athlete Charles Clark to discuss mental health and Lou Giaquinto to speak about his journey at the Inaugural Athletic Director's Network Social provide our student-athletes with the tools to grow as students, and athletes.

Supported: The last two years have shown a remarkable commitment by our supporters and expansion of external partnerships. We're thankful for more-than 35 companies and local businesses that support SCSU Athletics and Recreation through external partnerships. In addition, the last year saw Southern Connecticut Athletic and Recreation's supporters contribute over $350,000 during the annual Day of Caring campaign as well as the Homecoming Campaign, which rings in at a 300% PERCENT INCREASE from the previous year. With the support at Southern Connecticut Athletics' Annual Golf Outing, it was a banner year for our supporters.

We can't thank you enough. Your contributions allow us to improve the student-athlete experience. It means additional scholarship dollars, funding for travel and equipment, and gives us the ability to enhance programming to support our student-athletes' needs.
