Volleyball Sweeps SNHU, Advances To NE10 Tournament Semifinals

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Behind a balanced offensive attack, the Southern Connecticut State University volleyball team swept Southern New Hampshire University, 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-23), in a Northeast 10 Conference Championship Quarterfinal match-up at Pelz Gym in New Haven, Conn. With the win, and Saint Anselm's upset of top-seeded New Haven, the Owls will travel to Garden City, N.Y. to take on the Hawks in the NE10 Semifinals hosted by Adelphi University. The Owls improve to 19-13 on the season.

The Owls' "Big 3" of Alyssa Gage (Beverly Hills, Fla.), Gabriela Vazquez (Meriden, Conn.) and Leanna Jadus (Long Beach, Calif.) each had double-digit kills led by Vazquez's 14 while Gage and Jadus each had 13 kills each. Gage also had 10 digs while Jadus contributed 11 for her 17th double-double of the season. Freshman Kailyn O'Neal (Katy, Texas) had 36 assists and three timely kills from the setter position.

NOTES
  • Vazquez was on a mission to lead the Owls entering the game, shrugging off three-straight games in which she fell short of double digits in kills. The third-year Owl hit .500 for the game for her second-best effort of the season.
  • For Gage she recorded her fourth double-double in her last five games and double-digit kills for the ninth time in her last 10 games.
  • The Owls win was their fifth-consecutive win and their eighth-straight win against a NE10 opponent.
  • The Owls also cap the season at 13-1 (.929 winning percentage) at Pelz Gymnasium for the best home record in program history, and the second-most wins on their home court since SCSU went 14-5 at Pelz in 2009.
  • The quarterfinal match-up marked the second time the Owls hosted a postseason game on their home court after they hosted Saint Rose in 2012, which they lost.
  • Southern improves to 5-4 all-time in the NE10 tournament and advance to the Championship Semifinals for the fourth time in program history with a 3-1 record in quarterfinal match-ups.
