Jones' Record-Breaking Day Leads Volleyball to Victory Over Assumption, 3-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Taylor Jones (Middletown, N.Y.) broke the SCSU single-game assists record as the Southern Connecticut volleyball team defeated Assumption, 3-1, at Pelz Gymnasium. The Owls improved to 22-8 on the season and 8-3 in the Northeast 10, while the Greyhounds fell to 7-10 overall and 5-6 in the NE10.

Jones was a force to be reckoned with as the sophomore setter picked up her record-breaking 57 assists through four sets, and added eight digs, and three service aces and three kills. In addition to the single-game program record, Jones also became the second player in program history to have six 50-assists games in a single season.

Senior Erika Benson (Kings Park, N.Y.) led the way as she had a .577 hitting percentage and 16 kills, both a game-highs, and added three blocks. Graduate student Abigail Epstein (Crystal River, Fla.) hit for .433 with 15 kills, four service aces, and three blocks. Junior Gabriela Gaibur (Monroe, N.Y.) recorded 20 digs, 10 kills, and two blocks, while graduate student Gabriela Vazquez (Vega Alta, Puerto Rico) had 12 kills, 11 digs, and two blocks. 
 
Player Notes
  • Taylor Jones broke the single-game program record for assists with 57. Kimberly Lachowicz, on Oct. 29, 2009 and Sept. 20, 2012, and Alexandra Nimz, on Sept. 20, 2016, previously held the record with 56. 
  • Taylor Jones also set a new single-season record for most 50-assist games with her sixth. Tea Carter previously held the record of five games with 50-or-more assists in 2019. 
  • Jones' 57 assists were also tied for the sixth most assists in a four-set match in all of Division II this season. 
  • Jones has the second most 50-assists games by a Southern player for their career. Lachowicz had eight when she graduated in 2012. 
  • Erika Benson's 16 kills were a new career-high. Benson also has three games this season with at least three blocks. 
  • Abigail Epstein recorded her third consecutive game with at least three blocks. Epstein also tallied her sixth game with at least three service aces.  
  • Gabriela Vazquez recorded her fifth double-double of the season, while Gabriela Gaibur recorded her 18th double-double.
  • Krishnalei So'oto now has nine games with at least 20 digs this season, while Gabriela Gaibur now has four 20 digs.
  • Sophia Castellano tied a career-high in digs with 13. Her previous career-high was against Felician on Sept. 18. 
  • Southern has won six consecutive games against Assumption dating back to 2016.
  • The Owls are currently on a five-game winning-streak.

The Owls will host Southern New Hampshire University and Stonehill College on Friday, Nov. 12 and Saturday, Nov. 13 at Pelz Gymnasium.
