SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The No. 8-seeded Southern Connecticut volleyball team fell to the No. 1-seeded American International College, 3-0, in the 2021 NCAA Division II East Regional Quarterfinals at Henry A. Butova Gymnasium. The Owls finish the season 23-11 overall, while the Yellow Jackets improved to 28-6.
Graduate student Gabriela Vazquez (Vega Alta, Puerto Rico) led the team in kills with 11 on the night. Graduate student Abigail Epstein (Crystal River, Fla.) had five kills, four digs, three blocks, and two service aces. Sophomore Taylor Jones (Middletown, N.Y.) dished out 27 assists and added one service ace and a block. Sophomore Krishnalei So'oto had 13 digs, and two service aces. Senior Erika Benson (Kings Park, N.Y.) also had seven kills for the Owls.Â

How It Happened
- Set one was tight. The Owls collected the first point of the match, but the Yellow Jackets rattled off four-straight to take the lead. The Owls countered with a 6-1 run that gave them a 7-5 lead. The lead changed four more times over the course of the set, but AIC finished with a 6-2 run that allowed them to capture a five-point victory in the opener.
- The second set began much like the first with a tug-o-war for the lead, but the Yellow Jackets were the one's to claim it. Both squads traded points for the majority of the set, but AIC finished with a 7-3 run that helped them take set two by six points.
- AIC started the final set out scoring the Owls, 5-1. Southern responded with an 8-2 run to gain the lead, 9-7. Both sides went tit-for-tat with points, but the Yellow Jackets pulled away with a 6-1 run that gave them a five-point lead. The Owls attempted to claw their way back into the set, but a 4-0 run expanded the Yellow Jackets' lead to seven, 21-14. Both squads split the remaining points, 4-4, but AIC's consistent attack led them to a seven-point victory in the opening round of the regional tournament.Â
