Men’s Cross Country Set To Open Season At Adelphi Panthers XC Invite

The Southern Connecticut State University men's cross country team will begin their 2021 season on Sept. 3, 2021 at Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, N.Y. for the Adelphi Panthers XC Invite. This will be the Owls' first meet since Nov. 9, 2019, when they competed in the NCAA Division II East Region Championships, and their first of seven meets currently scheduled this season. Southern Connecticut's 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Returning Athletes
Southern welcomes back Jalen Coleman (Middletown, Conn.), Stephen Fengler (Wallingford, Conn.), Chris LeBeau (Bristol, Conn.), Jake Mattei (Bethany, Conn.), Shawn Odei-Ntiri (Hamden, Conn.), Terrell Patterson (Waterbury, Conn.), Dan Perusina (Hamden, Conn.), and Ryan Slesinski (Southington, Conn.) from the 2019 season. LeBeau is a two-time Northeast 10 All-Conference selection, two-time USTFCCCA All-Region East Performer, and the 2018 NE10 Rookie of the Year. Mattei is also a two-time NE10 All-Conference selection and was a USTFCCCA All-Region East Performer in 2019. In 2018, Patterson was a First-Team All-NE10 selection and a USTFCCCA All-Region East Performer. He recorded a time of 36.21.0 in the 10K at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships.

Returning athletes from the 2020 season include Derrick Arnold (Wallingford, Conn.), Michael Coleman (Haddam, Conn.), Michael DeMartin (Fairfield, Conn.), Sophonias Dires (West Hartford, Conn.), Shea Kenney (Groton, Conn.), and Dylan McGuire (Preston, Conn.), who will compete in their first cross country season. Coleman, DeMartin, and McGuire competed during the 2021 track and field outdoor season as well.

Newcomers
Southern brings in Luca Cazzaniga (Bethel, Conn.), Owen Gagne (Wethersfield, Conn.), Evan Kristopik (Plantsville, Conn.), and Jonathan Volpe (Naugatuck, Conn.) to their 2021 squad. Cazzaniga was an All-State selection at Bethel High School, Gagne was a two-time All-State and three-time All-Conference selection at Wethersfield High School, and Volpe was an All-State selection at Naugatuck High School.

2019 Recap
Southern competed in six meets during the 2019 season. They finished in first place at the Adelphi Panther Invitational to begin the season and second place at the D2/D3 Challenge and Paul Short Run. During the NE10 Championships, Southern finished in third place, while Mattei and LeBeau recorded top 15 finishes. Southern finished fifth in the NCAA East Regional Championship, while Mattei and LeBeau finished in the top 20.
