Volleyball Drops Pair to Holy Family, Bridgeport

WATERBURY, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University volleyball team fell to Holy Family University and the University of Bridgeport to close out the Post Eagles Invitational. The Owls dropped a 3-1 decision to Holy Family, 3-1 before falling 3-2 to Bridgeport. SCSU falls to 6-2 on the season, while Holy Family improves to 2-1, and Bridgeport improved to 3-2.

  • Layla Cortez (Miami, Fla.) led the Owls with 13 kills as well as three blocks while Gabriela Gaibur (Monroe, N.Y.) finished with 12 kills and 13 digs.
  • Taylor Jones (Middletown, N.Y.) also had a double-double with 28 assists and 10 digs, as well as one service ace.
  • The Owls won the first set after breaking a 8-8 tie and going on a 10-2 run to take a 18-10 lead. Holy Family got back on board and won the serve back before the Owls closed out the game with a 7-1 win to take the first set, 25-12.
  • The second set was tight as the two teams traded points to a 16-16 tie. After Holy Family won four-straight points to take a 20-16 lead, Southern answered with a 4-1 run to make it 21-20, Holy Family. HFU powered away down the stretch, winning four of the final six points.
  • In the fourth set, both teams battled to a 12-12 tie before a 5-2 run gave Holy Family a 17-14 lead. Holy Family then won five of the next six points to take a 22-16 lead before both teams played back-and-forth with a kill by Gaibur making it 23-21. Holy Family was able to hang-on and close the match with a pair of kills by Carly Covington.

  • Layla Cortez led the Owls for the second-straight game in kills with 15. Gabriela Gaibur and Abigail Epstein (Crystal River, Fla.) each collected 14 kills.
  • Taylor Jones picked up 51 assists, nine digs, two service aces, and two blocks.
  • The Owls won the first two sets before surrendering the next two sets to the Purple Knights, who forced a fifth set. 
  • The final set was close with both teams trading points and the lead for much of the game. With SCSU up 8-6, Bridgeport went on a 6-0 run to take a 12-8 lead. The Purple Knights held on for the win.

  • Taylor Jones has recorded double-digit assists in all eight games for the Owls this season.
  • Taylor Jones has recorded 50-or-more assists in two of the Owls last three games.
  • Krishnalei So'oto tallied a career-high 28 digs against Holy Family on Sept. 11. 
  • Gabriela Gaibur tallied her fourth double-double of the season against Holy Family on Sept. 11 with 13 digs and 12 kills.
  • Erika Benson has tallied at least one block in each of the Owls eight games this season.
