Women's Soccer Travels to Adelphi for NE10 Opener on Sept. 15

The Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer team will head to Garden City, N.Y. on Wednesday, Sept. 15 for a conference showdown with Adelphi University. 

All-Time Against Adelphi: 6-6-3
The Last Time They Met: Greta Brunello scored the opening goal for the Owls as Mikaela Magee scored the go-ahead goal in the 87th minute to help the Owls defeat the Pantheres , 2-1  at Jess Dow Field. Allie Smith made eight saves in the victory.

Last Time Out
  • The Owls cruised past the College of Staten Island in their home opener on Sept. 11 at Jess Dow Field.
  • Riley Ayer placed a beautiful cross pass into the box where a diving Kaitlyn D'Amico headed it past the State Island goalkeeper for the Owls first goal of the season, and 11th of her career.
  • Aries Bell maneuvered through traffic before leading Victoria Vera with a pass through two defenders. Vera then collected the ball at the top of the box and flicked a shot past the Dolphins keeper to score her first collegiate goal and give the Owls a 2-0 lead.
  • Caileigh Driscoll's pass from the goal line to the front of the net found Vera for the freshman's second goal of the game.
  • Moments after what appeared to be a goal by Julia Alicea, which was waved off after officials ruled it was stopped before the goalline, the junior forward ran around the Dolphins defense before blasting in the first goal of her career.
  • Entering the game in the final minutes of play for her first collegiate minutes, Kat Mancinone took a feed from Alicea from 35 yards out, ran past her defender and beat the keeper for her first career goal.    

Scouting the Match Against Adelphi
  • Adelphi is coming off a 1-0 loss to conference opponent and No. 17 nationally ranked Southern New Hampshire on Sept. 12. 
  • Through two games this season, the Panthers have scored just one goal off the foot of junior forward Hailey Franco.
  • After not scoring a goal through the first two games, the Owls picked up five goals from four different players as they defeated Staten Island, 5-0. 
  • The Panthers have been narrowly outshot by opponents 26-23 through two games this season.
  • The Owls have outshot opponents 33-16 through three games this season.

NE10 Award Nods
Freshman Victoria Vera earned her first collegiate honors after she was named to the Northeast-10 Weekly Honor Roll, announced by the conference on Monday, Sept. 13. Vera came off the bench, chipped in three shots, and scored her first two collegiate goals in the Owls' 5-0 victory over Staten Island.

Notes
  • SCSU scored five goals against Staten Island on Sept. 11. The last time Southern Connecticut scored five goals in a game was in a 5-1 win at Bentley on Oct. 10, 2010.
  • Kaitlyn D'Amico, Victoria Vera, Julia Alicea, and Kat Mancinone all scored against Staten Island on Sept. 11. The last time the Owls had four different goal scorers in a game was in a 6-1 win against Felician in Rindge, N.H. on Sept. 3, 2010.
  • Victoria Vera became the first SCSU freshman to score two goals in a game since Meghan Kelley on Oct. 28, 2017. 
  • With Victoria Vera and Kat Mancinone both scoring their first career goals against Staten Island, it was also the first time that two freshmen scored in the same game since Victoria Buonanni and Hannah Bodner did it against Newberry on Nov. 14, 2014.
  • With a win over Staten Island in their home opener on Sept. 11, the Owls are 3-0-1 in their last four home openers dating back to the 2017 season.
