Volleyball Sweeps Post, Franklin Pierce

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University volleyball team defeated Post University and Franklin Pierce University at Pelz Gymnasium. The Owls improve to 9-2, while Post falls to 3-8, and Franklin Pierce falls to 4-4.

Senior Heliceliz Rivera (Corozal, Puerto Rico) was the Owls playmaker in game one as she collected 20 assists, while freshman Lily Miller (Ottawa, Ill.) notched 10 assists in her Pelz Gymnasium debut. Graduate student Abigail Epstein (Crystal River, Fla.) led the Owls in kills with nine and service aces with three.

Junior Gabriela Gaibur (Monroe, N.Y.) led all players with 14 kills and chipped in 11 digs. Sophomore Taylor Jones recorded 33 assists, 14 digs, and two service aces. Graduate student Abigail Epstein tallied seven kills, six total blocks, and five services aces.

Notes
  • Heliceliz Rivera recorded a career-high 20 assists against Post on Sept. 17. Her previous career-high was set on Sept. 4 against Saint Rose, when she had 18 assists.
  • Lily Miller has collected double-digit assists in two-straight games for the Owls.
  • SCSU is 13-2 in the last 15 games against Post. The Owls defeated Post this season on Sept. 10 in the Post Eagles Invitational, 3-1.
  • The Owls have won their first seven games of the season at Pelz Gym for the first time since winning their first 11 at home in 2009.
  • Gabriela Gaibur recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 14 kills and 11 digs against Franklin Pierce on Sept. 17.
  • Taylor Jones recorded her second career double-double with 33 assists and 14 digs against Franklin Pierce on Sept. 17.
  • Jones' 14 digs against Franklin Pierce are also a career-high. Her previous career-high of 10 digs came on Sept. 11 vs. Holy Family.
  • Abigail Epstein's five service aces against Franklin Pierce on Sept. 17 are a season-high.
Historical Notes Through First 10 Games Of The Season
  • Gaibur and Ebstein are the first pair of teammates with at least 100 kills through their first 10 games of the season since Leanna Jadus (106), Gabriela Vazquez (103), and Alyssa Gage (101) all did so in 2018.
  • Gaibur's 110 kills are the most by a Southern player through their first 10 games of the season since Jadus had 122 in 2017.
  • Gaibur (114) and Krishnalei So'oto (Oceanside, Calif.) (112) are the first pair of Southern teammates with at least 100 digs through their first team games of the season since Jadus (108) and Anna Venard (104) did so in 2018. 
  • Gaibur's 114 digs are the most by a Southern player through their first 10 games of the season since Venard has 122 in 2017. 
  • Gaibur also became the first Southern player since Jadus in 2017 with at least 110 kills and 110 digs since Jadus in 2017. 
  • After defeating Post, SCSU has won eight of its first 10 games of the season for first time since 2017.
