SCSU Volleyball Edged By New Haven, 3-1

NEW HAVEN., Conn. - Southern Connecticut volleyball lost to New Haven, 3-1, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at Pelz Gymnasium. The Owls dropped to 15-12 overall and 4-6 in the NE10 with the loss while the Chargers improved to 14-10 and 5-4 in conference play.

Gabriella Gaibur (Monroe, N.Y.) finished with eight kills to give her 805 for her career and become just the seventh player in program history to reach 800 kills for her career. 

Kacey Deecher (Granby, Mass.) led the Owls with five kills as well as seven aces and a block while Payton Reis (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) had six kills and three blocks in the game. Sara Enright (Yorba Linda, Calif.) led the Owls with eight kills and 14 digs. Taylor Jones (Middletown, N.Y.) had 22 assists as well as 19 digs for the double-double.

New Haven captured the first set, 25-17, and jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the second set. Southern played back-and-forth with the charges before New Haven grabbed an 18-15 lead and threatened to pull away. Southern responded with seven unanswered points, highlighted by all three of Deecher's service aces as well kills by Enright, Gaibur and Reis, to take a 22-18 lead. After New Haven won the ball back, Enright came up with a huge kill followed by a block by Reis to give Southern a 24-19 lead. After a chargers point, it was Reis winning the set with another kill.

The third set saw New Haven pull away early as they jumped out to an 11-5 lead. Southern clawed their way back to a 15-10 deficit before New Haven closed it out with a 10-2 run. In the fourth set, New Haven used a 10-1 run to blow-open a 5-5 game and take a 15-6 lead. Southern scored three of the next four points, to make it 16-9, but New Haven answered with a 7-0 rally to take a 23-9 lead before ending a three-point rally by the Owls to close out the match.

Southern returns to action when it travels to Rockville Centre, N.Y. to take on Molloy on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 12 p.m.
