SCSU Gymnastics Finishes Second At Tonry Invitational

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut gymnastics finished second at the four-time Barbara & Don Tonry Invitational at Yale University John J. Lee Amphitheater, finishing behind host Yale and ahead of Bridgeport and Springfield.

Hanna Zebdi led the Owls with scores of 9.6 on the Vault and a career-best 9.75 on the Floor while Emelia Diaz (Jacobus, Pa.) scored a 9.725 and Angel Lee (Chino Hills, Calif.) posted a 9.7 on the Beam. Bianca Leon (Miami, Fla.) had a team-high score of 9.825 on the bars. 

VAULT
  • The Owls posted a team score of 47.875 on the Vault for their highest event of the afternoon.
  • Cassidy Girolamo (Newington, Conn.) led the Owls in the event with a 9.65 for fifth place.
  • Zebdi posted a 9.6 for sixth place while Lexi Bracher (Oakton, Va.) and Brooke Burkhart (Haymarket, Va.) both scored a 9.55 for a tie of 10th.
  • Both Bracher and Burkhart has posted a 9.5-or-higher on the Vault at every meet this season while Burkhart leads the team with a 9.694 average.
  • Sidney Wilson (Woodbrige, Ill.) scored a career-best 9.525 for 10th place out of 23 competitors.
FLOOR
  • Southern collected a 47.525 on the Floor.
  • Zedbi was the Owls' top-scorer in the event with a 9.750, good for a tie of fourth place, and a career-best score.
  • Noely Macias (Fitchburg, Mass.) was ninth with a 9.650. She's now hit with a 9.65 on the Floor in three-straight meets and is second on the team with a 9.55 average.
BEAM
  • First-year Owls Diaz and Lee led the Owls on the Beam to help Southern to a 47.250 team score.
  • Diaz posted a 9.725 for the second-best score her young career while Lee's 9.7 was also her second-best score. Diaz placed fifth while Lee was close behind in sixth.
  • First-year gymnast Alexa Melanson (Moncton, New Brunswick) turned in a career-best 9.450 for 10th place.
BARS
  • Southern's final event of the afternoon netted them a 46.750 on the bars.
  • Bianca Leon (Miami, Fla.) finished third with a season-best 9.825 and the Owls' second-best score of the season.
  • Audrey Arnold (Kirkland, Wash.) finished ninth with a 9.625, tying her previous top score, while Girolamo was 11th at 9.475.

Southern is back in action on Friday, Feb. 18 when it travels to West Chester University.
