Owls Break 800 Freestyle Relay Record, Sit In 2nd Place After First Day of NE10's

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut Men's Swimming & Diving completed the first day of the 2022 Northeast 10 Conference Championships in second place with 98.5 points, just a half-of-a-point behind leader Bentley (99).

Southern Connecticut sophomore Andrew Buehler won the 1 Meter Diving Championship for the second-straight year. As a freshman in 2020, Buehler won the 1 Meter and 3 meter Diving Championships on his way to earning NE10 Most Outstanding Diving honors at the championship event. Buehler posted a score of 502.45. Mattheus Silva finished fifth with a score of 411.40 in the event.

The 800 Freestyle Relay team of McAlister Milne, Henry Velazquez, Franklin Kuhn and Chandler Tucker made a statement in the Owls' first race of this year's championship event, winning the Gold with a championships record time of 6:45.56, breaking the previous record set in 2018 by Southern Connecticut of 6:46.67. That record was posted by Bryce Murad, Max Padro, Tyler Prescott and Tyler Vander Vos. The Owls' B Team of Bobby Hahn, Collin Doyle, Derek Melanson and Timothy Kanaley finished second in their heat with a time of 7:09.75.

In the 1,000 Freestyle, Southern placed two swimmers in the top five, highlighted by a third-place finish and Bronze Medal for Dylan Prescher who posted a time of 9:57.78. Evan Bombery was fifth with a time of 10:08.48.
The 2022 NE10 Championships continue on Friday, Feb. 18 with preliminary rounds in the 500 Freestyle, 200 Individual Medley and 50 Freestyle set for 9:45 a.m. at "The Hutch" with finals set for 6 p.m.
