Gymnastics Wins Springfield Tri-Meet, Breaks Bars Record

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Southern Connecticut gymnastics defeated Springfield and Rhode Island in a tri-meet hosted by Springfield. The Owls posted a season-best score of 192. 025, ahead of Springfield's 186.8 and RIC's 185.125. Southern also broke the program record on the uneven parallel bars with a score of 48.575 to break the three-year record of 48.425 set on Feb. 2, 2019.

The Owls' showing in Springfield marked the first time this season that Southern featured four scores of 9.8-or-higher. Chelsea Baker and Bianca Leon scored a 9.825 on the Bars while Hanna Zebdi matched their scores on the Floor and Audrey Arnold had a 9.8 on the bars.

Zebdi finished in the top five in three events, led by a second-place finish on the Floor with a 9.825, a third place finish on the Vault at 9.625 and also posted a 9.65 on the Beam for fourth place.

BARS
  • Southern's previous all-time high of 48.425 was set on Feb. 2, 2019 at Yale's Don Tonry Invitational against the Bulldogs, Bridgeport and Springfield.
  • In addition to Baker, Leon and Arnold scoring in the 9.8's, Delaney Fields had a 9.575 followed by Cassidy Girolamo with a 9.55. Southern took the top five spots in the event for the afternoon.
VAULT
  • On the Vault, the Owls combined for a 47.85 to lead the field. Brooke Burkhart continues to excel for the Owls in the event as she finished first tied for first overall with Girolamo with a 9.7.
  • Zebdi was third with a 9.625.
BEAM FLOOR
  • Zebdi was the Owls' top finisher in the Floor exercise, finishing tied for second with a 9.825.
  • Girolamo was sixth at 9.725 while freshman Ciana Rios posted a season-best 9.675 for ninth place.
UP NEXT
The Owls will travel to Philadelphia, Pa. to compete in Temple's quad meet which also features Bridgeport and Maryland on Thursday, Mar. 3.
