3/19/2022 10:18:00 PM

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Southern Connecticut State University gymnastics had a historic day with a fifth-place finish at the Inaugural Gymnastics East Conference Championships at Brown University's Pizzatola Sports Center in Providence, R.I. The Owls broke the program record with a meet score of 194.200, while also breaking the program records on the vault and the bars.

Penn won the inaugural championships event with a score of 196.950 followed by Brown with a 195.975. West Chester at 195.250 and Yale at 194.825 finished ahead of the Owls.

In addition to the overall score record, the Owls also posted a 48.575 on the vault to beat the previous record of 48.475 on Feb. 12, 2022. They followed with a record bars score of 48.625 breaking the previous mark of 48.425 on Feb. 2, 2019.

Despite entering the inaugural GEC Championship seeded sixth out of eight teams, Southern emerged as the leader out of the first session with their record-breaking score. The Owls received incredible performances, one after another, throughout the session. Bianca Leon, the Owls lone All-GEC First Team selection, finished the first session in the lead in the bars and beam events. On the bars, Leon followed a career performance by Chelsea Baker, who scored a career-best 9.875, with the same score.

Most impressive was Leon's gutsy performance on the beam. The Owls senior had not competed in the event since the second meet of the season due to an injury and, as Southern's final competitor at the championships, posted a meet-best 9.825.

Hanna Zebdi continued to solidify herself as one of the GEC's top performers with a 9.85 on the floor, a 9.8 on the vault and a 9.6 on the beam. Senior stand-out Cassidy Girolamo had a 9.75 on the vault, a 9.55 on the bars and a 9.65 on the floor as she and Zebdi were the only two Owls to score in three events.

Audrey Arnold posted a 9.825 on the bars for fourth place in the event while Ciana Rios hit with a career-best 9.75 routine on the floor. Sidney Wilson also posted career-bests on the vault with a 9.775 and the floor with a 9.55. Brooke Burkhart scored a 9.75 on the vault, Emiley Kahl posted a 9.70 on the beam and Angel Lee also scored a 9.775 for the Owls second-highest score on the beam while Ava Boyd had a season-best 9.625 on the floor as the Owls' first competitor of the afternoon.
