SCSU Gymnastics Sends Twelve To USA Gymnastics Nationals

2022 USAG Collegiate National Championships

Southern Connecticut will featured 13 student-athletes at the 2022 USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships hosted by Cornell University at Newman Arena in Ithaca, N.Y. Cassidy Girolamo and Hanna Zebdi will lead the Owls after both qualified on the vault and floor.
 
Sidney Wilson, Brooke Burkhart and Lexi Bracher will compete on the vault as well, while Chelsea Baker, Bianca Leon, Audrey Arnold and Delaney Fields will compete on the bars. Molly Froman, Emelia Diaz and Angel Lee will compete on the beam while Noely Macias qualified for the floor, but will not compete due to injury.

Cassidy Girolamo Notes
  • All-GEC Vault Second Team
  • Senior Cassidy Girolamo led the Owls in overall points with 361.3 and was the only Southern gymnast to compile 100 points in three different events. Girolamo totaled 126.075 on the vault, 121.7 on the bars and 113.525 on the floor.
  • Girolamo qualified for the vault with a National Qualifying Score (NQS) of 9.735 and on the floor with a NQS of 9.695.
  • Girolamo's top score of the year on the vault came at West Chester with a 9.775 while she also posted a 9.75 at the GEC Conference Championships on Mar. 19.
  • Girolamo has posted a score of 9.7-or-higher on the vault in nine-straight events.
  • On the floor, Girolamo's top scored of 9.75 came against Brown, New Hampshire and Penn State on Mar. 13.
  • For the year, Girolamo's 9.698 average on the vault led the Owls while her 9.46 on the floor ranked third.
Hanna Zebdi Notes
  • All-GEC Vault Second Team, All-GEC Floor Second Team.
  • Zebdi qualified for the vault with a team-leading NQS of 9.765 while also leading the team with a 9.79 NQS on the floor.
  • Zebdi also has the Owls top scores in both events this season with a 9.8 on the vault in each of her last two meets, including the GEC Conference Championship, and also the team's top score on the floor with a 9.85 at the GEC's. She's posted a score of 9.8-or-higher in four of her last four meets on the floor.
  • Zebdi's 9.698 was tied with Cassidy Girolamo for the team lead while her 9.608 led Southern Connecticut.
Bianca Leon Notes
  • Bianca Leon was named a WGCA All-America Award winner on the bars after posting a NQS of 9.810.
  • All-GEC Bars First Team.
  • This season, Leon competed primarily on the bars, despite starting the season on the balance beam and floor as well. Due to an injury, Leon was limited to bars competition where she posted a score of 9.8-or-higher on five occasions including a season-best 9.875 at the inaugural Gymnastics East Conference Championship and finished second.
  • Leon also competed on the beam for the first time since the second week of the season, posting an incredible 9.825 for fourth place at the conference championships.
  • Leon is the Owls record holder on the bars with a 9.90 against Rutgers, Cornell and West Chester on Mar. 6, 2020 and also the balance beam with a 9.90 against Bridgeport and Brown on Feb. 2, 2020.
  • She was also part of the bars team that broke the program record with a 48.625 at the GEC Championships on Mar. 10. 2022.  
Noely Macias Notes
  • Noely Macias qualified on the floor with a NQS of 9.6, but will not be able to compete due to injury.
  • Macias was second on the Owls' roster with a NQS of 9.575.
Chelsea Baker Notes
  • Chelsea Baker had an incredible season on the bars with a NQS of 9.745.
  • Baker, a senior, competed for the first time in her career after several injuries, and the pandemic, held her from competing for the last three years.
  • In her first season of competition, Baker competed in the bars at 11 meet this season, scoring in eight of the 11.
  • Baker is coming off a career-best 9.875 at the GEC Championships and has posted a 9.8-or-higher on three occasions this year.
Delaney Fields Notes
  • Delaney Fields qualified for Nationals with a 9.615 NQS on the bars and has posted a score of 9.5-or-higher in five-straight meets.
Brooke Burkhart Notes
  • All-GEC Vault Second Team
  • Owls freshman Brooke Burkhart posted a 9.730 NQS on the vault and averaged a 9.694 for the year, which was good for the second-best average on the team behind Girolamo and Zebdi.
  • Burkhart competed in all 12 meets for the Owls this season and posted a score of 9.7-or-higher on eight occasions.
  • Burkhart posted a season-best 9.775 against Rhode Island College on Feb. 12 and is coming off a 9.75 at the GEC's.
Angel Lee Notes
  • All-GEC Beam Second Team
  • Angel Lee qualified for the balance beam with a NQS of 9.715, first on the Owls roster.
  • Lee matched her season- and career-best 9.775 at the GEC Championships.
  • Lee led the Owls with a 9.567 average.
Emelia Diaz Notes
  • All-GEC Beam Second Team
  • Emelia Diaz was second on the Owls' roster with a 9.69 NQS on the beam.
  • She was also second, behind Lee, with a 9.469 average.
  • Posted a season- and career-best 9.8 againts Bridgeport and Brown on Jan. 30 and again against West Chester on Feb. 18.
Sidney Wilson Notes
  • Freshman Sidney Wilson qualified for the vault with a 9.6 NQS, good for fourth on the Owls' roster.
  • Wilson averaged a 9.546 on the vault this season, and is coming off a season- and career-best 9.775 at the GEC Championships.
Lexi Bracher Notes
  • Lexi Bracher posted a 9.565 NQS on the vault while averaging a 9.527.
  • She posted a season-best 9.6 on two occasions.
Molly Froman Notes
  • Molly Froman posted a NQS of 9.585 on the beam, good for third on the Owls' roster.
  • She also averaged a 9.469 for the season.
  • Froman posted a season-best 9.75 on Mar. 11 against George Washington, Maryland and Towson.
Audrey Arnold Notes
  • Audrey Arnold was third behind Leon and Baker on the bars with a NQS of 9.71.
  • Arnold led the team with a 9.487 average on the bars this season and is coming off a season-best 9.825 at the GEC Championships.
Team Notes
  • At the GEC Championships, the Owls broke the program record with a meet score of 194.200, while also breaking the program records on the vault (48.575) and the bars (48.625).
