SCSU Baseball Hosts Le Moyne For NE10 First Round On Tuesday, May 10

No. 2-seeded Southern Connecticut baseball will host No. 3 Le Moyne for a Northeast 10 Conference Baseball Championship First Round game on Tuesday, May 10 at 3:30 p.m. at The Ballpark at SCSU. The Owls completed the regular season with a record of 30-12-1 with a conference record of 14-8-1 while Le Moyne was 25-21 and 14-10 in the NE10.
 
THE NE10 BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
  • Adelphi took the crown in the Southwest Division with a record of 17-6-1, followed by the Owls in second place at 14-8-1. Le Moyne finished the year in third place at 14-10 wile Saint Rose clinched the fourth and final spot at 12-12.
  • In the Northeast Division, Southern New Hampshire finished first with a record of 21-3 followed by Franklin Pierce at 16-8, and Assumption and Saint Anselm at 13-11, with Assumption winning the tiebreaker for third place.
  • With the Championship Weekend hosting duties rotating between divisions, 2022 will see the Northeast Division serving as host.
  • The winner of the Owls game against Le Moyne will advance to face the winner of the Saint Anselm and Southern New Hampshire matchup. Other first-round matchups include Adelphi against Saint Rose and Franklin Pierce against Assumption.
  • Southern New Hampshire has opted to not host the remainder of the tournament due to issues at their field, so the highest-remaining seeded team will host the weekend's tournaments, in order of Franklin Pierce, Assumption and Saint Anselm. 
THE OWLS IN THE NE10 TOURNAMENT
  • Southern owns an all-time record of 13-22 in 35 NE10 tournament games all-time, reaching four championships finals.  
  • Southern ended a streak of five-straight NE10 tournament losses when it shocked top-seeded Adelphi on its home field in the 2019 tournament.  
  • The Owls lost to AIC in the First Round last season, 11-6.
  • All-time, Southern is 5-8 in 13 NE10 First Round Games.  
  • This is the first postseason meeting between SCSU and Le Moyne, all-time.
  • The Owls have made four NE10 Championship finals (2002, 2004, 2006, 2008) finishing as the runner-up each year.  
ALL-TIME AGAINST LE MOYNE
  • This is the first postseason meeting between the two teams in their all-time history.
  • The Owls and Dolphins have faced each other 33 times, with Le Moyne with 19 of those games.
  • The Owls own a record of 6-10 in 16 games at The Ballpark at SCSU, including a 2-2 record this season against the Dolphins.
  • Both wins this season came on walk-off home runs, first on a grand slam by Andrew Eng on Apr. 2 and then by Tony Zambito in extra innings on Apr. 21. 
SCOUTING LE MOYNE
  • Zach Brush leads Le Moyne with a .360 average (63-175) with 10 doubles, five home runs, 29 RBI and 38 runs scored.
  • Michael Smith checks-in with a .353 (59-167) average with a team-best 10 home runs as well as 44 RBI and 29 runs scored.
  • Ty Syta leads Le Moyne with 48 RBI as well as a .597 slugging percentage and a .454 on-base percentage with a team-high 27 walks. Syta is hitting .349 (52-149) for the year.
  • Drew Carroll led the team with 44 runs scored as well as 13 stolen bases.
  • On the mound, Jacob Marshall and Max Parker both hold a 6-3 record while Marshall has a 3.48 ERA as well leading the team with 96 strikeouts in 72 1/3 innings pitched. 
SCOUTING THE OWLS
  • Southern enters the conference tournament with a record of 30-12-1 including a 6-3-1 mark in its last 10 games.
  • Billy Sullivan concluded the regular season with a .370 (60-162) average with a team-leading 59 runs to go along with eight doubles, three triples, two home runs and 23 runs scored.
  • Sullivan also led the team with 31 walks, posted a .480 on-base percentage, had a team-high seven sacrifice hits and was 14-for-14 on stolen base attempts.
  • In 22 conference games, Sullivan hit .346 (28-81) with 24 runs scored.
  • Andrew Eng finished the year hitting .373 (57-153) with 53 runs scored while leading the team in doubles (15), home runs (9), RBI (57), slugging percentage (.673) and on-base percentage (.487) while collecting 30 walks and being hit by a pitch 10 times.
  • Eng wrapped-up conference play with a .395 average (32-81) in 22 NE10 games with 10 RBI, seven home runs, 33 RBI and 23 runs scored.
  • Andrew Eng has now hit safely in 10-straight games, after previously posted a hitting streak of 16 games this season. In his last 10 games, he has four home runs, 16 RBI and eight runs scored.
  • Tony Zambito hit .333 (24-72) in 21 NE10 games, with 11 RBI, 30 runs scored and 20 stolen bases as well as 16 walks and nine hit-batsmen. 
  • For the year, Zambito hit .293 (39-133) with 48 runs scored, 29 walks, a team-high 13 HBP's and a conference best 38 stolen bases.
  • DeMartino is hitting .355 (13-37) over his last eight games to boast his season average to .302. In that span, DeMartino has driven in 11 runs and scored nine more.
  • In 22 NE10 games, DeMartino hit .306 (26-85) with four home runs, 23 RBI and 17 runs scored.
  • Mike DeMartino played in his 198th and 199th career games, breaking the record of career games played of 198 set by Ryan Geffert.
  • Connor Goggin owns an eight-game active hitting streak, in which he's driven in seven runs and scored eight more.
  • On the mound, Nick Guarino and Steve Phillips both finished the year with a conference best 8-1 record.
  • Phillips led the team with a 3.73 ERA, which is good for 15th in the NE10, as well a 8.10 strikeouts-per-nine-innings rate after striking out 63 batters in 70 innings pitched.
  • Tommy Hughes finished the year with six saves, good for second in the conference, with 41 K's in 37 innings pitched for a 9.97 K/9IP rate.
  • In conference play, Spencer Fox has a 0.47 ERA after allowing one earned run in 19 innings with 18 strikeouts.
  • Peter Phillips has allowed just two earned runs in 10 2/3 innings pitched in seven NE10 games for a 1.69 ERA. Phillips has allowed just six earned runs in 24 2/3 total innings for the year for a 2.19 ERA with a 3-0 record in relief and three saves.
