SCSU Athletics Announces Sports Medicine Staff Additions

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University Director of Athletics Chris Barker has announced the addition of Jessica Case '19, Deanna Laubach and Anthony Simoes '14 to the Owls' sports medicine staff. The three join the staff to be headed by Chris Leary, who was hired in July.
 
"The health and safety of our student-athletes is vital for their experience at Southern Connecticut," Barker said. "In a short time, Chris Leary has done an outstanding job in implementing sports medicine protocols that enhance the student-athlete experience and prepare our athletes to be successful. Under his guidance, I know we have a great sports medicine staff in place that will ensure their health and safety."
 
Case has been with the Owls since 2019 after completing her bachelor's degree at SCSU in athletic training. Currently completing her master's in physical exercise and chronic disease, Case has worked extensively with several Owls programs over the last three academic years. Specifically, Case has experience with the men's and women's cross country/track & field, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's basketball, softball and gymnastics.
 
Case previously worked at Arc in Waterbury, Conn. as a direct support professional from 2014 through 2019, assisting in the care for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Laubach comes to Southern Connecticut from West Chester University of Pennsylvania, where she completed her bachelor's degree in sports medicine while competing for WCU's women's soccer team from 2017 through 2019. Laubach was a recipient of the Pat Croce Scholarship in 2021 and the NATA District 2 Tanya Dargusch Leadership in Community Service Scholarship wihle completing her master's degree in athletic training in 2022.
 
Laubach served as an athletic trainer for WCU's Fall sports in 2022 as well as working with Villanova University football as well as Immaculata University softball, field hockey and women's lacrosse.
 
Simoes comes to Southern Connecticut after serving as the head athletic trainer for Shelton Public Schools since 2014. With the Shelton school system, Simoes administered sports medicine for one of the largest school districts and athletics programs in the State of Connecticut, comprised of more-than 900 student-athletes and 60 teams.  Simoes coordinated the sports medicine program for Shelton High School including injury prevention programs, injury evaluations, injury management, injury treatment and rehabilitation, educational programs and counseling for student-athletes.
 
He also coordinated and scheduled physical examinations and medical referrals for student-athletes. Responsible for the formation of the institution's athletic training staff, including hiring, training and supervision of assistant/associate athletic trainers, graduate assistant athletic trainers and student athletic trainers.
 
Simoes also worked as an athletic trainer at Yale University since 2015, as well as roles with Connecticut Orthopedic Specialists and also served as the athletic trainer at Albertus Magnus College from 2017 to 2018. Simoes has been an instructor in Southern Connecticut's sports medicine program since 2014. He holds a bachelor's degree in management from Keene State College and a bachelor's degree in exercise science from Southern Connecticut.
