SCSU Women's Soccer Comes-From-Behind To Beat New Haven, 2-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A pair of second-half goals powered Southern Connecticut women's soccer to a 2-1, come-from-behind win against Elm City rival New Haven in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at Jess Dow Field in New Haven, Conn. With the win, Southern improves to 5-3-2 overall and 3-1-2 in NE10 play while New Haven drops to 4-5-2 overall and 2-4-0 in conference play.

Victoria Vera (Plainview, N.Y.) had the game-winning goal and also set-up Jadyn Reilly (Hamden, Conn.) with the Owls' newcomer's first goal of the season. Taylor Hennig (Farmington, Conn.) had assists on both plays for the two-point night. Owls keeper Abby Allen (Orange, Conn.) stopped five of UNH's six shots on goal to preserve the Owls' win.

Just under 15 minutes into the game, a Southern Connecticut turnover in their own zone handed the ball to Madison Blonde who took a shot from the top of the box that was out of Allen's reach and put the Chargers out in front, 1-0. Southern had three opportunities in the remaining first-half time but could not capitalize. Meanwhile, Allen kept the score within a goal with several key saves heading into the break.

The second half saw Southern emerge from intermission hungry, evidenced by the Owls' outshooting the Chargers, 10-4, down the stretch. In the 63rd minute, Southern was awarded a throw in at midfield. Riley Ayer sent the ball to Vera, but it was cut off by a New Haven defender and sent the other way. Hennig kept the ball in the zone, heading it back to Vera who took two dribbles and split a pair of Chargers' defenders, sending a perfect pass to Reilly who took a touch and then lifted a shot with her left leg over the outstretched hand of the New Haven keeper to tie the game at 1-1.

Two-minutes-and-four-seconds later, it was Vera scoring to give the Owls the lead. After a foul by New Haven in their own zone, Hennig took the free kick from 35 yards. Her ball to the top of the box found Vera, who slid between a host of New Haven defenders and headed the ball past New Haven's goalkeeper to give the Owls the lead.

Reilly and Vera become the eighth and ninth players, respectively, to score for the Owls this season while Hennig's two assists give her a NE10 leading six for the year. Allen's five saves on six shots gives her a NE10-best save percentage of .917 in six conference games.

The Owls return to action this weekend when they travel to Assumption on Saturday, Oct. 1.
