Southern Connecticut State University Athletics

Former Southern Connecticut State University standout Tara Michaels is in her 10th season as an assistant coach with the gymnastics program in 2016-17. 

The 2002 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) co-Gymnast of the Year joined the Owls’ in 2003 as an assistant coach and has earned ECAC Assistant Coach of the Year honors on three occasions (2004, 2006, 2010). 

She was an outstanding competitor for the Owls, earning All-ECAC honors in floor exercise three times, with an additional All-Conference honor on balance beam in 2002. She also was the ECAC floor exercise champion in 1999. 

Michaels earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and is a sixth grade teacher at Worthington Hooker School in New Haven. She also completed her master’s degree in bilingual education from SCSU in 2007. 

Michaels currently resides in Wallingford, Conn. with her husband, Kenny, and their son, Logan.
