Vasile Cioana joined the Southern Connecticut gymnastics coach staff as an assist in 2022-23. Cioana brings over 26 years of coaching experience at the international level.Â
A native of Resita, Romania, Cioana competed on the Romanian National Team at 14 years old, competing on the national and international level. From 1991 through 1999, Cioana won or placed in the top three in over a dozen international competitions in Romania and across Europe and Asia, including the Goodwill Games, the American Cup, World Cup and European Championships.
Cioana's coaching career began in Romania in 1999 at the Gymnastics Sports Club of Resita, coaching boys for national competition. In addition, he coached Dynamic Gymnastics in Mohegan Lake, N.Y. from 1999 to 2001, coaching both girls and boys. From 2001 through 2006 he worked at American Gymnastics Training Center in Southington, Conn., including strength training, travel coordination and coaching at national events.
For the last 15 years, he has been the owner and head coach at Vasi's International Gymnastics in Newtown, Conn. which included extensive high-level skill training, strength and conditioning, as well as organizing competition schedules. In that time, he has coached two NCAA Division I women's gymnastics student-athletes and two men's gymnastics student-athletes. Coiana's athletes and teams have captured multiple state, regional and national championships.
