NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Michelle Grecni (Danbury, Conn.) of the women’s indoor track and field team and sophomore Raymond Cswerko (Torrington, Conn.) of the men’s swimming and diving team have been named as the Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
This is the first installment of this program in its new format. The program had run as an ‘Athlete of the Month’ edition since its origination in January, 2008. The new format will provide the athletic department with additional recognition opportunities for its student-athletes during the course of the academic year.
Grecni placed first and broke the Northeast-10 Conference championships meet record in the pole vault with a jump of 3.80 meters (12 feet, 5.5 inches). In all, Grecni helped lead the Owls to a fifth-place team finish at the competition. Her mark matched a personal season-best, also set back on Jan. 12 at the Yale Collegiate Invite, and remains the No. 9 mark in all of Division II.
Cswerko was named the Metropolitan Championships Rookie of the Meet for his performance over the weekend, a competition in which the Owls finished fifth as a team. He set two Metro Championship records and two team records in the 200 and 400 yard individual medley events. Cswerko finished the 200 IM in 3:57.77 and the 400 IM in 1:48.61, breaking two previously Owl records held by Ben Michaelson. Cswerko also had another top-eight finish in the 100 yard breaststroke, as he finished with a time of 59.70.
