NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Lauren McVey (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) of the volleyball team and junior Gary Williams (West Haven, Conn.) of the football team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
McVey and the Owls went 3-2 last week to improve their overall record to 8-3 on the year. During the five-game stretch, she led the Owls in kills (58) and kills/set (3.41), while ranking second on the club in total digs (78) and digs/set (4.6). She also had 11 service aces during the week. McVey had a double-double in the Owls’ wins over Bloomfield and East Stroudsburg on Sunday. She also registered a double-double in the Owls’ loss to LIU-Post earlier in the week.
Williams had a career night in the Owls’ 40-34 win over Merrimack on Friday night. He finished with six catches for a career-high 163 yards along with a 77-yard touchdown reception. Williams was named to the Northeast-10 Conference weekly honor roll for his efforts.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
