NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Seniors Lauren McVey (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) of the volleyball team and Asher Brandt (Orange, Conn.) of the men’s cross country team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
McVey played a key role in wins for the volleyball team last week against AIC and Saint Anselm. She finished with 18 kills and 19 digs in the win against AIC and 14 kills and 17 digs in a loss to Saint Michael’s. McVey joined the 1,000 career kills club in the win against Saint Anselm by tying a season-best performance with 18 kills. She currently has 1,014 kills to her credit.
Brandt placed fourth overall with a time of 31:41.4 to lead the Southern Connecticut State University men's cross country team to a sixth place finish at the NCAA Division II East Regional at Franklin Park on Sunday. By virtue of his finish, Brandt is expected to receive an invitation to the National Championship in Spokane, Wash.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
