NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) of the women’s basketball team and sophomore Deshawn Murphy (Hamden, Conn.) of the men’s basketball team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Murphy played an integral role in a perfect 3-0 week for the Owls, who now stand at 9-1 overall and 5-1 in Northeast-10 Conference play. He averaged 21.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game in the three contests, while shooting 49-percent (22-for-45) from the field and 50-percent (12-for-24) from three-point range. Murphy opened the week by scoring 13 points in the win over Bridgeport before exploding for a career-high 30 points in a one-point victory at LeMoyne. He capped the week with a 21-point performance in the overtime triumph over New Haven.
Beathea averaged 15 points and 11.5 rebounds per game in two contests for the Owls’ last week. She also shot 52-percent (13-for-25) from the floor. Beathea scored 15 points and pulled down eight rebounds at LeMoyne and posted team-highs of 15 points and 15 rebounds against New Haven.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
