NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) of the women's basketball team and freshman Michael Mallory (Waterbury, Conn.) of the men's basketball team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Mallory set a career-high with 26 points against Dominican on Jan. 4, and averaged 21 points in the Owls' pair of wins at the Clancy Tournament. He also scored 16 points in a win over Post. Mallory was also selected as the Northeast-10 Conference Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week earlier today for his efforts. The Owls improved their record to 11-1 overall thanks in part to Mallory's play.
Beathea scored 14 points and added 10 rebounds against Dowling on Jan. 4. It was her sixth double-double of the season. Beathea ranks nationally among all NCAA players with her six double-doubles.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University's 'Athlete of the Week' recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the 'Athlete of the Week' program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
