NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Chelcie Rosborough (Severn, Md.) of the gymnastics team and junior Raymond Cswerko (Torrington, Conn.) of the men’s swimming and diving team have been named the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Rosborough had a fine showing to help the Owls post a second-place finish at the Cornell Big Red Invitational over the weekend. She earned a share of the top spot on the beam with a 9.6 and was third on the floor exercise with a 9.7.
Cswerko was selected as the Men's Swimming Championship Most Valuable Athlete for the second straight year after leading the Owls to their 10th Northeast-10 Conference Championship in 11 years. The junior set three NE-10 individual records over the four-day event.
On Saturday, Cswerko shattered the conference record in the men’s 400 IM, finishing first with a time of 3:53.64 (the previous mark had been 4:00.58), before grabbing his second conference record of the night in the men’s 100 breaststroke with a time of 54.81, which also reset the pool record at Hutchinson Natatorium.
Then on Sunday, Cswerko took the men’s 200 breast in 1:59.15, setting another Northeast-10 and another Hutchinson pool record. All three of his record-setting times were good for top-six in Division II this season or better.
Cswerko was also a part of four Northeast-10 record-setting relays for the Owls, as Southern Connecticut set new benchmarks in the 200 free relay (1:23.34), the 400 free relay (3:05.59), the 200 medley relay (1:31.08) and the 400 medley relay (3:20.61).
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
