NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Nick Lebron (Newington, Conn.) of the men’s indoor track and field team, junior Raymond Cswerko (Torrington, Conn.) of the men’s swimming and diving team and junior Michelle Grecni (Danbury, Conn.) of the women’s indoor track and field team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Lebron won the NCAA Championship in the heptathlon for the second time in three years over the weekend. He also won the competition in 2012 and received All-America honors last year, while claiming this year’s title with a new NCAA Division II record score of 5,765 points. Lebron sealed the title with first place finishes in the 60 hurdles and 1000 meters, along with fourth place in the pole vault. His score was also a New England heptathlon record among all three Divisions.
Cswerko capped this year’s NCAA Championships as a three-time All-American and was the 2014 NCAA Champion in the 200 fly and the runner-up in the 400 individual medley. He also added a fifth place finish in the 200 individual medley.
Grecni finished as the national runner-up in the pole vault during the NCAA Division II Championships. This was the third year that Grecni qualified for the championships and second straight year earning All-America honors.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
