NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Jenna Mallico (Milford, Conn.) of the women’s soccer team and John Fennekohl (Mamora, N.J.) of the men’s cross country team have been named as Comcast/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Month for September. Both student-athletes have been pivotal in leading their respective clubs to regional and national acclaim thus far this season.
Mallico, a freshman midfielder, has made a strong contribution in her rookie season with the Owls. She led the club with nine points (four goals, one assist) in six matches during the month. Two of Mallico’s four markers were game-winners, with those coming against Assumption and Le Moyne. For her efforts, she was named Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week on Sept. 29.
For the season, she leads the team and is ranked sixth in the Northeast-10 Conference with 17 points (six goals, five assists). The Owls are currently 7-3-1 and ranked No. 5 in the region.
Fennekohl has been a key performer for the Owls, ranked No. 21 nationally, this fall. He finished sixth out of 90 runners – and was the first Division II finisher – at the Fairfield University Invitational on Sept. 13. For his efforts, he was named Northeast-10 Runner of the Week.
Two weeks later, he also finished sixth overall (out of 148 runners) and helped lead the Owls to a team victory at the Leeber Invitational. SCSU defeated eight Division I programs at that competition.
