NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Yesenia Evaristo (Bethel, Conn.) of the softball team and junior Nick Lebron (Newington, Conn.) of the men's outdoor track and field team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Evaristo powered the Owls to a 7-0 week with both her arm and her bat. She posted a 5-0 record in the circle with a 1.45 earned run average. Evaristo closed her season with a complete-game shutout in a win over AIC on Saturday. She was named to the Northeast-10 Conference Weekly Honor Roll for her efforts.
Lebron won the decathlon at the prestigious Penn Relays last week amongst a highly decorated field. The reigning NCAA indoor champion in the heptathlon scored 7,160 total points to also post a NCAA Division II automatic qualifying mark.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University's 'Athlete of the Week' recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the 'Athlete of the Week' program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
