NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman Shatajah Wattely (Uncasville, Conn.) of the women's outdoor track and field team and senior Nick Lebron (Newington, Conn.) of the men's outdoor track and field team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Wattely collected All-America honors in three separate events at this past weekend's NCAA Championships. She finished eighth in the 200 meters (24.40 seconds) and ran a leg of both the 4x100 relay (46.21) and 4x400 relay (3:42.91) that finished sixth. Wattely also participated in the preliminaries of the 100 meters.
Lebron set a new school record and earned All-America honors with a fifth-place finish in the decathlon at the NCAA Championships. In total, he scored 7,377 points at the competition. Lebron's effort capped a decorated campaign that also included decathlon titles at the Penn Relays and New England Championships.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University's 'Athlete of the Week' recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the 'Athlete of the Week' program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
