NEW HAVEN, Conn. – #Kristen Frost# (Madison, Conn.) of the women’s swimming and diving team and #John Wiechman# (Buxton, Maine) of the football team have been named as the Comcast/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Month for October. Frost helped the Owls jump out to a strong start to the 2008-09 season, while Wiechman has been instrumental in his team’s run towards the post-season.
Frost started the season with a pair of victories at the Rutgers Sonny Werblin Invitational, as she took home the 400 individual medley and 200 individual medley at the competition which included Division I programs Fordham and Rutgers. For her efforts, she was named as the Northeast-10 Swimmer of the Week.
Frost also took home first place in the 100 and 500 freestyle at the Bentley Invitational, setting new pool and event records in the process. Once again, she was named Northeast-10 Swimmer of the Week honors for her performance.
Wiechman stepped into a starting role in mid-September in relief of injured All-American Jarom Freeman and has emerged as one of the top running backs in the region. During the month of October, he averaged 133 yards per game. His best effort of the month was a 229-yard, four touchdown showing in a win over Bentley.
Wiechman, who tallied eight touchdowns in just three games in October, was named Northeast-10 and ECAC Offensive Player of the Week following the Bentley game. He was also named to the Northeast-10 weekly honor roll following a 122-yard outing against Pace.
