NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Caroline Staudle (New Windsor, N.Y.) of the women’s soccer team and freshman Raymond Catapano (Franklin Square, N.Y.) of the football team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Staudle helped lead the Owls to a pair of victories last week that ran the club’s winning streak to five consecutive matches. Also named as the Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Week for her efforts, Staudle posted three goals in two outings. She scored the eventual game-winning goal in a 2-0 triumph over LeMoyne and followed that up by scoring the game-tying and game-winning goals as the Owls rallied for a 2-1 win over Saint Anselm on Saturday.
Catapano led all rushers with 20 carries for 127 yards and one touchdown in the Owls’ game against Assumption on Saturday. His 22-yard touchdown scamper on a 4th-and-1 play midway in the fourth quarter gave the Owls the lead at the time. Catapano also completed 12-of-30 passes for 170 yards and one touchdown through the air. For his efforts, he was also selected as the Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
