NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Erica Ridella (Warwick, N.Y.) of the women's soccer team and freshman Shaquan Hall (Newark, N.J.) of the football team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Ridella helped the Owls run their unbeaten streak to seven straight matches with a win and a tie last week. She did not merit a goal in a draw with New Haven to start the week, a contest in which she turned away a career-best nine shots. Four days later, Ridella stopped six shots in a 3-0 blanking of St. Michael's. For her efforts, she was also selected as the Northeast-10 Conference Goalie of the Week.
Hall made an impact both as a wide receiver, rusher and returner in Saturday's game against New Haven with 149 all-purpose yards (31 receiving, 110 return, eight rushing) and a touchdown. He had a receiving touchdown and his biggest kickoff and punt returns of the day (54 and 27 yards, respectively) set up both Owls' touchdowns. For his efforts, he was also selected as the Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University's 'Athlete of the Week' recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the 'Athlete of the Week' program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
