NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Sarah Vaughan (Hamden, Conn.) of the women’s cross country team and sophomore Markus Jacobsen (Oslo, Norway) of the men’s soccer team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Vaughan placed 22nd at this past weekend’s Northeast-10 Conference Championship and was the top individual finisher for the Owls. She completed the course in a time of 26:41.
Jacobsen totaled a team-high 11 points (five goals, one assist) in three games last week to help the No. 15 nationally ranked Owls reach the finals of the Northeast-10 Tournament. He opened the week with a hat trick in the win over Franklin Pierce. Two days later, he scored the game-tying goal in the 83rd minute as the Owls rallied for a 2-1 win over Adelphi in the semifinals. Jacobsen then scored one goal and set up another in Sunday’s NE-10 final against No. 6 nationally ranked Southern New Hampshire. He was named to the All-Tournament team for his efforts.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
