NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Katherine Crochet (Waterbury, Conn.) of the women’s swimming and diving team and junior Dieter Gutbrod (Sandy Hook, Conn.) of the men’s cross country team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Crochet posted three top-10 individual finishes and also swam a leg of a second place relay at this past weekend’s United States Merchant Marine Academy Invitational. She took first place in the 50 freestyle (25.13 seconds) and was also sixth in the 100 backstroke (1:05.49) and ninth in the 100 fly (1:10.94). Crochet also swam a leg of the 400 freestyle relay that was second.
Gutbrod earned All-Region honors with an 11th place individual finish at this past weekend’s NCAA Regionals. He completed the course in 31:52.5. Gutbrod and the Owls finished eighth as a team at the competition.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
