NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) of the women’s basketball team and senior Michael Lee (New London, Conn.) of the men’s indoor track and field team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Beathea helped the Owls extend their winning streak to five consecutive games during a 3-0 week. She averaged 16.3 points and 11.0 rebounds per contest and contributed a pair of double-doubles while shooting 53-percent (20-of-38) from the field. She tallied 15 points and 13 rebounds in a win over Concordia and followed that with 18 points and 12 boards in a win over LeMoyne. Beathea capped the week with 16 points and eight rebounds in a triumph over Post.
Lee captured first place in both the long jump and the triple jump at the Elm City Challenge. Both marks were NCAA provisional qualifying efforts. He came through with leaps of 15.03 meters in the triple jump and 7.07 meters in the long jump. Lee’s triple jump mark is currently the fourth-best in Division II, while his long jump effort is currently 10th.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
