NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Danielle Powell (Middletown, N.Y.) of the women’s basketball team and senior Luke Houston (Pearl River, N.Y.) of the men’s basketball team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Powell helped the Owls extend their winning streak to six consecutive games on Sunday in a 62-40 triumph at Georgian Court. She finished with seven points, a team-high 14 rebounds, three blocks, two assists and one steal in the triumph.
Houston averaged 19.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals per outing in Southern’s two contests last week. He opened the week with a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds against Bridgeport and followed that up with a team-high 27 points in Sunday’s win over LeMoyne. He also had five rebounds, five assists and two steals against LeMoyne.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
