NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) of the women’s basketball team and sophomore Michael Mallory (Waterbury, Conn.) of the men’s basketball team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Beathea averaged 16.0 points and 13.7 rebounds per game in the Owls’ three contests last week. She opened the week with a career-high 28 points and pulled down 14 rebounds at St. Thomas Aquinas. Beathea then added nine points and 16 rebounds against New Haven before closing the week with 11 points and 11 rebounds against University of the Sciences. Beathea now has 10 double-doubles on the year. She leads the Northeast-10 Conference in rebounds per game (12.2) this year.
Mallory finished with 19 points, four rebounds and four assists in the Owls’ lone contest of the week, a 74-65 victory over New Haven. The No. 20 nationally ranked Owls improved to 10-3 overall and 5-1 in NE-10 play with the win.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
