NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Michelle Grecni (Danbury, Conn.) of the women’s indoor track and field team and junior Christopher Curtin (Wethersfield, Conn.) of the men’s swimming and diving team have been selected as the Connecticut Army National Guard/SCSU Athletes of the Week.
Grecni set a new personal best and school record last weekend in the pole vault at the Metropolitan Conference Championship. She won the event by clearing a height of 4.00 meters (13 feet, 1.5 inches). That mark is currently the best in all of Division II this winter and was also a NCAA automatic qualifying standard.
Curtin helped lead the Owls to their fifth consecutive Northeast-10 Conference championship over the weekend and was named the meet’s Most Outstanding Swimmer. He won the 400 individual medley in 4:01.83, the 200 IM in 1:53.28 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:04.88.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University's 'Athlete of the Week' recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the 'Athlete of the Week' program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
