NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Junior Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) of the women's basketball team and sophomore Michael Mallory (Waterbury, Conn.) of the men's basketball team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/SCSU Athletes of the Week.
Beathea posted 12 points and a team-high 14 rebounds in the Owls' lone contest of the week, an eight-point loss to No. 9 nationally ranked Adelphi. It was her 13th double-double of the year. Beathea was also named to the Northeast-10 Conference weekly honor roll for her effort.
Mallory played a pivotal role in a 2-0 week for the Owls. He averaged 28.0 points per game and hit 21-of-33 shots from the floor, including 11-of-17 three-pointers. Mallory opened the week with a career-high 35 points in a win over East Stroudsburg and followed that up with 21 points in a win over Adelphi.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University's 'Athlete of the Week' recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the 'Athlete of the Week' program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
