NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Samantha Menichini (Shavertown, Pa.) of the gymnastics team and senior Nick Baviello (Orange, Conn.) of the baseball team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Menichini registered a 9.575 on vault, a 9.35 on the bars and a 9.7 on the floor exercise in Sunday’s quad-meet against Maryland, William and Mary and Bridgeport.
Baviello powered the Owls to a three-game weekend sweep of St. Michael’s. He batted .555 (5-for-9) with a team-high four runs batted in over the stretch. Baviello connected for three hits and drove in a run in the series opener. In Sunday’s nightcap, he plated all three runs with a pair of doubles and a sacrifice fly.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
