NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Shatajah Wattely (Uncasville, Conn.) of the women’s indoor track and field team and sophomore Yakabu Ibrahim (Franklin, N.J.) of the men’s indoor track and field team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Wattely continued her masterful work at the NCAA Championships over the weekend. She ran a leg of the 4x400 relay that won the national title with a time of 3:44.91, which was also a new school record. Wattely also placed sixth in the 200 meters (24.48 seconds) to earn All-America honors in that event. Southern Connecticut placed eighth as a team at the NCAA’s.
Ibrahim collected All-America honors in the 60 hurdles at this weekend’s NCAA Championships. He finished fourth in that event with a time of 8.02 seconds.

The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
