NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Shatajah Wattely (Uncasville, Conn.) of the women’s outdoor track and field team and senior Michael Cameron (Hartford, Conn.) of the men’s outdoor track and field team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Wattely collected All-America honors in three separate events at the NCAA Championships last weekend. She finished fifth in the 100 meters (11.60) to set a new school record in that event and followed that up with a sixth place finish in the 200 meters (23.37) that was also a school record. Wattely also ran a leg of the 4x400 relay that captured All-America accolades.
Cameron capped his collegiate career with All-America honors in a pair of events at the NCAA Championships. He finished third in the shot put with a new school record of 59 feet, 10.25 inches. Cameron's heave of 55.51 meters in the discus was also a new school record as part of a fifth place finish.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
